Can a person take medical insurance?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Asalamualaikum.

I have a question. Is personal medical insurance haram? I have always had medical insurances with my employers in the past which I benefited from reduced cost for medical services for my family and myself. I no longer have an insurance plan from an employer and was considering getting one on my own. Can you give me your views on this. Jazak Allah

Medical insurance operates in a similar manner as other insurances, where interest is present, and the possibility of claiming more than what was paid or receiving less that what was paid is present.

Hence, it will not be allowed in Islam for one to have a medical insurance.
