Is it necessary to reply to salaam in text or messages that people send. Or is it ok if just say it verbally.

It is necessary to reply written salam as well. However, one has the option either reply in written form or verbally. It is not necessary to only reply in written form. It is also enough to reply verbally.
ويجب رد جواب كتاب التحية كرد السلام. (الدر المختار) (قوله ويجب رد جواب كتاب التحية) لأن الكتاب من الغائب بمنزلة الخطاب من الحاضر مجتبى والناس عنه غافلون ط … قال شارحه المناوي: أي إذا كتب لك رجل بالسلام في كتاب ووصل إليك وجب عليك الرد باللفظ أو بالمراسلة (الدر المختار مع رد المحتار: 9/594، ط: زكريا ديوبند)
