Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Is wearing Nike products haraam?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

Wearing Nike products is makruh (disliked).

Although it is true that the brand Nike was inspired by a Greek goddess, the brand such as the “swoosh” symbol itself is not a direct representation of religiosity or any polytheistic belief. The Nike brand today is a representation of speed and motion before anything else although it may have had a different meaning sometime in history.

This is different from if there had been symbols of, a cross, Hindu deities, Nazar amulet etc., because these are direct representations of paganism and polytheism.

Nevertheless, one should avoid to the best of one’s ability.
