we have a query on accumulated interest money.
We are running a college for the indigenous malawians, and because they cant afford the full amount of fees and other expenses so for muslims it is subsidised by zakaat money and for non muslims by sadqa or lillah money.
the question is can we use interest money for non muslims instead of lillah or sadqa to subsidise their expenses.
note the interest is accumulated unwillingly
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
The avenue of dispensing interest money is the poor and needy without the intention of reward. If the students in reference are poor and needy, they may be assisted through interest money.
We advise a system be placed for the students to become the owners of the interest / Zakat money and they in turn pay for the fees etc. The procedure of wakalah (delegated authority) may be adopted to achieve this. [1]
