How Long Can a Baby be Breastfed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Answered by Shaykh Yūsuf Badāt

Question:

What is the age limit of breastfeeding babies in Islam?

Answer:

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.

In general, the period of breast feeding is two years regardless of the baby’s gender.

“And mothers suckle their children full two years, it is for one who wants to complete the [period of] suckling.” (Qurʿān 2:233)

A few months after the two years, up to six months is acceptable according to some jurists. The baby must be weaned after the maximum period of 2.5 years. (Maʿārif al Qurʿān)

And Allāh Knows Best
