Rolling Pants Up Above the Ankles for Men

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mathabah.org

Question:

I have heard differences of opinion regarding the length of trousers [or pants] that men are required to keep them above the ankles. However, is it permitted to simply fold our trousers upward? I do this on a regular basis and not just for ṣalāh (ritual prayer). Please clarify!

Answer:

In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Kind

Jazāk Allāh Khayr/ Thank you for your question.

In Islam, men are obligated to keep their garments above their ankles in a fashion that their ankles are completely exposed. This can also be achieved by rolling up one’s pants, trousers or garments as you have indicated in your question.

“Whatever portion of the waist wrap (izār) is below the ankles, it shall be in the fire.” (Bukhārī)

And Allāh Knows Best
