Renting out masjid for weddings and other functions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Question:

I would like to ask regarding a Masjid Hall, our Masjid has a hall downstairs and the main Masjid (jamat khana) upstairs. This is one building.

This hall is rented for weddings and other functions. Many times the weddings are mixed and women are roaming around the Masjid car park. You will be aware of the manner in which women dress in weddings. Without Hijab and tight immodest clothing. At Salah times women are often seen in the Masjid car park mixing with men.

Is is permissible to rent a Masjid hall for such purposes?

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The masjid is a place of worship and deserves utmost respect. Whoever comes to the masjid is required to maintain discipline and modesty. The masjid is the house of Allaah Ta’aala. It is imperative to a greater extent that one adheres to the laws of Allaah Ta’aala while in the masjid or its vicinity. How can one fathom violating the laws of Allaah Ta’aala in His very house? Islaam has prohibited the unregulated intermingling of the sexes.

It is not permissible to use the masjid hall or rent it out for any function wherein the laws of Shari’ah are violated and the respect and sanctity of the masjid is violated.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best
