Wearing football jerseys of Muslim countries

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it permitted to wear football jerseys of Islamic countries. For example, the jersey of national team of Morocco and if yes, is it permitted with Islamic names of footballers at the back of the shirt.

Bismillaah

A: The country being Islamic does not make the sport Islamic. Islam has got nothing to do with the sport. In fact when playing at a national and international level, then 99 percent of the time it goes beyond Islamic parametres. There isn’t a haraam that does not take place in these stadiums and grounds. So what is the good in wearing these types of jerseys.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
