Working in the accounts department of a company that sells alcohol

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am working in the accounts department for a company that have a chain of restaurants and they sell alcohol. I only work in the accounts department I don’t sell alcohol but I do upload invoices on to their system that have alcohol sales written on it. In this case is it allowed in Islam to work at such a place. Will my earnings be halaal?

Bismillaah

A:

1. Yes

2. Yes, your earnings are halaal, however the work of uploading invoices relating to alcohol is reprehensible and not approved in Shari’ah. Hence, the earnings acquired through such a work is not halaal and must be given in charity without the intention of receiving any reward. Apart from this, you should engage in istighfaar and express disgust and resentment from your heart for doing this type of work (uploading invoices relating to alcohol). You should request your company to excuse you from uploading invoices relating to alcohol. If they do not accept your request, then it is better that you look for a more pure and halaal source of earning.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
