What is the role and responsibility of witnesses in a Nikah ceremony?

Can girls be the witness in or during Nikaah? (Kya Khawateen bhi Nikaah mein gawaah banai jaa sakti hain?)

If there are two women along with one man then they can become witness in nikah. Only women though many cannot become witness.
