Backbiting a person who has passed away

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: What happens if you back bite someone who is a believer or a non-believer who has already passed away? How can I get rid of this sin off my record?

Bismillaah

A: Make du`aa-e-maghfirat for a believer. For the non-believer, ask Allah Ta`ala’s forgiveness for yourself and resolve never to engage in backbiting in the future. Give some sadaqah as well. If the non-believer is living make du`aa that Allah Ta`ala grants him hidaayat.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
