Paying a contractor who passes away

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: If you owe money to someone for work they have done and they pass away, what should you do?Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Financial obligations do not end at death. The heirs simply take the place of the dead person and their financial right is upheld.

Whether they are Muslim or not, one should find out if they have family members and make sure their money is given to the right people. One would not simply give it to the general religious or ethnic group they belong to.

I pray this helps.
