Delayed Making up Missed Fasts of Ramadan

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Darul Iftaa Jordan
My wife had missed fifty days of obligatory fast due to menses and, sometimes, forgetfulness. What should she do to free herself from the liability?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.

A woman who broke fast of Ramadan due to menses is obliged to do two things:

1-Make up missed fasts.

2-Hasten to make up for them before next Ramadan arrives.

Furthermore, if  the next Ramadan arrives without having made up the missed fasts of the previous one, then she is obliged to make up for all the fasts and pay expiation, which is feeding a poor Muslim for each missed day (Save if she was ignorant).*Feeding a poor Muslim is estimated from {60} to one JD.   Besides, if the following Ramadan arrived without her having made up the missed fasts of the previous one, then she is obliged to offer two expiations for each missed fast (Feeding two poor Muslims for each missed day), in addition to making up the missed fasts. Further, if the delay continues till a third Ramadan(Third year) then she is obliged to offer three expiations for each missed day, in addition to making up for them and so on. And Allah the Almighty, knows best.
