Is it True that a Sahabi Told his Wife: “You are Divorced Until a Certain Point in Time.”

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Darul Iftaa Jordan
What is the story of the Sahabi who told his wife: "You are divorced until a certain point in time." Is this divorce effective? When is he permitted to take her back? What is the ruling when a man tells his wife: "You are divorced until a certain point in time?"

Answer:

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

We have searched the books of Hadith and found nothing about this story. As for the religious ruling on the person who tells his wife: "You are divorced until a certain point in time," the divorce takes place immediately. Ashirbini says, "If he said to her, "You are divorced until a certain point in time then divorce takes place immediately, whether theperiod was short or long. Allah the Almighty says, "when ye reach eventide and when ye rise in the morning;"."{Moghni Al-Mohtajj, 3/332}.

Note: Article (87), Paragraph (B) of the Jordanian Personal Status Law states, "Divorce tied to a certain point in the future isn`t effective." And Allah the Almighty knows best.
