attending Quran Khani gathering

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
If some invite for the Quran kahni what we do about it, should we go and join or not, some time brother or closed friend asked for it , if refused then friendship become non-friendship . Please in the light of Quran and Hadith let us guide.
If a person attends a gathering to read quran to send the reward to a dead person by chance or due to convenience then such attendance is fine but one should try not to partake of the food present in these gatherings. If someone knows that he/she is being invited to a customary gathering, considered bid’ah by scholars, then one should just say that he/she will recite so much quran by himself/herself and send the reward to the dead. This way you will be excused from the obligation of attending the gathering. This is also very helpful in keeping good relations with family and friends that you promise them to share the task with them and read a specific portion and send its reward to the dead. After doing it just let them know that you have done it.
