As salaam alaikum Mufti saab,
Few people in my familly started saying that we dont have to pray 20 Rakah Taraweeh as Prophet Mohammed S.A.W didnot pray 20 Rakah. But i am from Hyderabad india and we always paryed 20 Rakaah. I am confused now and my kids are also confused. Can you please give me references on why we pray 20 Rakah instead of 8 or some random number as Prophet Mohammed S.A.W didnot pray 20.

:الجواب وباللہ التوفیق
The number of rak’ahs of Taraweeh is not mentioned in any authentic narration. But in some weak traditions twenty rak’ahs are mentioned, which is supported by Hazrat Umar’s (RA) practice of praying twenty rak’ah. Hazrat Umar (RA) then established and authorized for the entire Ummah to pray twenty (20) rak’ahs of Taraweeh.
All the Companions (RA) of the Holy Prophet (SAW) at the time agreed to this ruling.
The four Imams and the majority of the Salaf and Khalaf scholars believe that praying twenty rak’ahs of Taraweeh is a compulsory Sunnah (سنت مؤکدہ) according to the guidance of the Holy Prophet (SAW) for the Muslim Ummah:
علیکم بسنتي وسنۃ الخلفاء الراشدین المہدیین۔ (سنن ابن ماجۃ ۱؍۵ (You must follow my Sunnah and the ways of the Rightly Guided Caliphs)
It is just as important to follow the instructions of the Righteous Caliphs as it is to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). Therefore, it is not correct to suffice for eight rak’ahs but twenty rak’ahs must be completed in Taraweeh. (فتاویٰ رحیمیہ ۴؍۳۹۹، ۱۰؍۱۳۳)
Those who believe in the eight rak’ahs of Taraweeh, argue from the tradition of tahajjud prayers, which is an incorrect reference and is against the practice of the four Imams and other jurists of the ummah and the muhaddithin.
عن ابن عباس رضي اللّٰہ عنہما قال: کان النبي صلی اللّٰہ علیہ وسلم یصلي في رمضان عشرین رکعۃ والوتر۔ (المصنف لابن أبي شیبۃ ۲؍۳۹۴، المعجم الکبیر للطبراني ۱۱؍۳۱۱ رقم: ۱۲۱۰۲، مجمع الزوائد ۳؍۱۷۲)
عن یزید بن رومان أنہ قال: کان الناس یقومون في زمان عمر ابن الخطاب رضي اللّٰہ عنہ في رمضان بثلاث وعشرین رکعۃ۔ (المؤطا لإمام مالک ۴۰، السنن الکبریٰ للبیہقي ۲؍۴۹۶)
وأنت خبیر بأن روایۃ ابن عباس إذ ہي مؤیدۃ بآثار الصحابۃ أولیٰ من روایۃ جابر وإن کان فیہا بعض الضعف، فإن جمہور الصحابۃ متفقۃ علی صلاۃ التراویح بعشرین رکعۃ، قال ابن عبد البر: وہو قول جمہور العلماء وہو الصحیح عن أبي بن کعب رضي اللّٰہ عنہ من غیر خلاف من الصحابۃ، قالہ العیني۔ ونقلہ القاضي عیاض عن جمہور العلماء والترمذي عن أکثر الصحابۃ۔ (أوجز المسالک ۱؍۳۸۳)
عن أبي سلمۃ بن عبد الرحمن أنہ سأل عائشۃ رضي اللّٰہ تعالیٰ عنہا کیف کانت صلاۃ رسول اللّٰہ صلی اللّٰہ علیہ وسلم في رمضان؟ فقالت: ما کان یزید في رمضان ولا في غیرہ علی إحدی عشرۃ رکعۃ یصلي أربعاً فلا تسأل عن حسنہن وطولہن ثم یصلي أربعاً فلا تسأل عن حسنہن وطولہن ثم یصلي ثلاثاً فقلت یا رسول اللّٰہ! أتنام قبل أن توتر؟ قال: یا عائشۃ إن عیني تنامان ولا ینام قلبي۔ (صحیح البخاري ۱؍۲۶۹ رقم: ۱۹۶۷، فتح الباري ۴؍۲۵۱ رقم: ۲۰۱۳)
