Does Swallowing Phlegm Break Your Fast?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: If phlegm from the throat had taste to it from suhr, would this break the fast if coughed up and swallowed? What if brings up food left in the throat?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I hope you are in the best of health and spirits, insha’Allah.

Swallowing phlegm does not break one’s fast. However, it would be recommended to spit it out. Its having a taste is of no consequence. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

Trace amounts of food from the throat would also be excused.

And Allah alone gives success.
