Can I Use Prayer Beads in the Prayer to Count the Tasbih?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

Can you use prayer beads/electronic counter in salah?  For example, in salat tasbih or if I wanted to recite a sura a number of times in each rakah.

Answer:

Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

No, it is disliked to count tasbih using prayer beads—or even by folding one’s fingers. Both constitute extra actions, and the basis of prayer is stillness (sukun) and reverence (khushu`). [Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah; Ibn al-Humam/Marghinani, Fath al-Qadir Sharh al-Hidaya; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

One can, however, press down on one’s fingers to keep track. [ibid.]

And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
