Question

How do I clean dried impurities on the various surfaces throughout my home?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

As much as one would want to be extra cautious and remove any trace of impurity in the home and, even more importantly, stop the spread of such impurities, one should not succumb to mere misgivings or doubts. Also, one should never allow themselves to go to extremes.

That said, consider the following two points:

1 – When is Impurity Considered to Have Spread

Hypothetically speaking, and this is likely not the case here, if there were impurities on the walls, cabinets, floors, etc, if they’ve dried, they do not spread by mere contact with something dry. [Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah]

Furthermore, basic upkeep of the house which includes wiping and/or washing surfaces is more than sufficient to remove those impurities.

2 – What Are The Consequences Involved

Assuming that there are dried impurities on the various surfaces of the house, this does not mean that you are required to seek out everyone’s spot and clean it. Furthermore, none of these impurities affect your prayers. A prayer mat serves as a barrier to any impurities on the floors.

That said, take a more relaxed approach with regards to purification. Consider the following verse which was revealed regarding purification:

Allah Most High says in what’s known as the ‘verse of purification’, “It is not Allah’s Will to burden you, but to purify you and complete His favor upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful.” [Qur’an; 5:6]

Summary

The basis of everything is purification. And a central principle of the Sacred Law is that undue difficulty must be averted. If you find yourself in an unduly difficult situation, there is something wrong. Seek clarity through knowledge and consulting the scholars. Ignore any and every suspicion, misgivings, doubts, conjecture, or opinions not rooted in knowledge.

“..Allah intends ease for you, not hardship…” [Qur’an; 2:185]
