Taking drugs and wudu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question:  Asalamu Alaikum. Would taking drugs like cannabis, cocaine, or another similar drug break one’s Wudu?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

Assalam’aleykum,

Drugs only break wudu if it causes them to be intoxicated.

When do taking drugs to break wudu?

If, after consuming drugs, one can still talk clearly and can walk normally, then wudu is not broken.

If most of this person’s words don’t make any sense, then the wudu of this person is broken (even if this person can walk correctly).

This breaking of wudu happens despite the exiting of filth from the body as a punishment for this person.  [Radd al-Muhtar]

Smoking marijuana is unlawful in Islam due to its mind-altering effects, the foremost of which is its distracting one from the remembrance of Allah and the prayer. [Nahlawi, Hadhr wal-Ibaha]
