Is It Fine to Use Recycled Tissue Paper?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question: Assalamu alaykum

Is it fine to use recycled tissue paper? Do the impurities go away during the recycling process?

Answer: Wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

I pray you are well.

The default ruling for all things is that they are pure – unless it is one of the few things specifically excluded from this principle, which are mentioned in the books of law, such as flowing blood, anything to do with pigs, unslaughtered meat, etc. Based on this, for example, one would not have to wash new clothes because there ‘may’ be impurities on them (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-muhtar).

Therefore, you would treat used toilet paper as being pure – especially as it could be made from any sort of paper, and because there are no traces of impurity on it.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.

Wassalam,
[Shaykh] Abdul-Rahim Reasat
