Can I Prostrate to Someone out of Respect?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: At the beginning of my Iaido class there is a series of prostrations: students line up behind the teacher and they all prostrate in the same direction; the teacher turns around and again, everyone prostrates; then each person puts the sword in front of them and another prostration is done. The prostration is nearly identical to how Muslims prostrate.

Are prostrations of respect such as these allowed?

Answer: assalamu alaykum

Prostrating to other than God – even if merely out of respect – is prohibited based on a number of prophetic traditions. Thus, when Mu’adh prostrated to the Prophet (God bless him) as a mark of respect, the Prophet (God bless him) forbade him stating, “Do not do so.” [Ibn Majah, Sunan; Ahmad, Musnad]

As for the prostration towards Yusuf (God bless him), this was either (a) permitted for his community and subsequently prohibited for ours or (b) it was not the conventional prostration that we are accustomed to, namely placing the forehead on the ground, but a slight nodding of the head or bowing.

It should be noted here that bowing as done in the ritual prayer would also be prohibited towards others. However, if it is a slight bowing that does not resemble the bowing of prayer, it would not be prohibited according to some scholars although it may be disliked. [al-Saffarini, Sharh Manzuma al-Adab (1:332); Fatawa Azhar (10:168); Mawsu’a al-Fiqhiya (23:125)]
