Question: Assalam alaikum,

After bringing chicken back from the butchers I find spots of blood around the meat and also while cutting it I find some inside. Should all this be removed before cooking? Also when eating chicken of the bone I find red areas where it looks like dry blood especially on the bone and where veins are. Could you clarify how careful someone needs to be regarding that?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

As long as there is a valid slaughter, it would be permitted to consume the meat of such an animal. The health of the animal is not a condition that effects the validity of the slaughter.

With the above, it is important to view this from an ethical perspective also. If the animals are injured due to poor and inhumane treatment, it is best to avoid purchasing meat from such slaughter houses and companies. This is not always possibly and although it would remain permitted to eat such meat we have been commanded to eat food that is wholesome as well.

And Allah alone gives success.

wassalam,
