Do the conditions under which an animal is raised affect whether or not it is halal to eat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Are there any stipulations for how an animal must be raised in order for it to be halal? Some members of my family refuse to eat any meat of animals raised in this country because of inhumane conditions on most farms, regardless of how they are slaughtered.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

How the animal is raised would not affect whether the meat is halal or not.

However, oppressing animals is sinful, and it would be praiseworthy to seek meat that does not come from oppressive meat factories meant for machines not living creatures.

Wassalam.
