I misunderstood the fiqh of travelling and I prayed qasr(2 raka`ats for zuhr, `asr, and `isha) for a whole year while working away from home. I came to know about my error recently. I was suppose to pray the full amount but I prayed the half amount. Now do I have to repeat those year’s worth of cut-short prayers or can I take the dispensation listed below?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May His blessings and peace be on His Beloved Prophet, the best of creation, and his family, companions, and followers

You are a traveller when you intend to stay in a particular place for 15 days or less without traveling. Thus, any prayers you shortened while intending to stay in a particular place for 15 days or less without traveling do not have to be made up, as they were valid travel prayers.

As for other prayers, it was obligatory for you to have performed them in full. Thus, you would have to make up all shortened Zuhr, Asr, and Isha prayers.

Please go to www.SunniPath.com, and search for ‘travel prayer’

Faraz Rabbani
