Can I change my name on major documents if it’s different from what everyone calls me?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
salaam
my name that is on my birth certificate is one that no one calls me by, evryone i know (family + friends) call me by another name, im at university, and registred with the name that evryone calls me by, but i now have to change my name at universoty to what it is on my birth certificate, is it permissible to change my name on major documents (i.e passport etc).

Answer
Bismihi Ta’ala

The name that is on your birth certificate is probably your real name. The name you are called by at home is probably out of love or a nickname, but not your official name. There is no Shar’ee harm in changing the names on all other documents to the official name.

And Allah knows best.
