How many sunnats are there after Jumuah Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: How many sunnats are there after Jumuah Salaah? You wrote an answer with the Hadith “

So from the above Hadith “your reference” 2 Rakaat are to be offered.

Obviously there are more Ahadith which you have quoted to support 4 + 2 Rakaats. So it means 6 are not compulsory and 2 rakaat can be offered and that will conclude Juma prayers?

Requesting to clarify a fatwa regarding this matter as below:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to offer two Rak’ahs after Jumu’ah in his house. May Allah help us all to do what pleases Him! [Fataawa Ibn Baaz, Vol. 12, pp 386-87] Reference for 2 Rakaat after Juma Prayers.

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to pray two rak`at before the Zuhr prayer and two rak`at after it. He also used to pray two rak`at after the Maghrib prayer in his house, and two rak`at after the `Isha’ prayer. He never prayed after Jumua prayer till he departed (from the Mosque), and then he would pray two rak`at at home. Reference for 4 Rakaat after Juma Prayers. Reference : Sahih Muslim 881 a In-book reference : Book 7, Hadith 86 USC-MSA web (English) reference : Book 4, Hadith 1915 Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When any one of you observes the Jumu’a prayer (two obligatory rak’ahs in congregation), he should observe four (rak’ahs) afterwards.

Then why you mentioned in your reply “A: There are 6 sunnats after the Jumuah salaah. One will first perform 4 sunnats and thereafter 2 sunnats. This is established from the Hadith.” In fact, Ahadith you mentioned has also Hadith with 2 rakaat only!

My Question is is it obligatory to offer 6 Rakaat? If we consider the above Ahadith and many more….

A: Some Ahaadith mention two rakaats while other Ahaadith mention four rakaats. The total rakaats of both these two types of Ahaadith come to six. Apart from this, six rakaats is reported from certain Sahaabah, the likes of Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) and Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar (radhiyallahu anhuma).

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
