Conducting khatams after a person passes away

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Here in our area, when someone dies people do khatams like reading various zikrs like Subhan Allah for 1 lac times etc. so that the deceased might get sawab. Is there any Islamic basis for it? Also does the deceased really get sawab from this if his own children are doing these adhkars?

Bismillaah

A: There is no basis for this. Each person should do esaale thawaab in his own time and place.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
