Working for a company that sells stationery and liquor

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I currently work for a company that retails and distributes stationery and office products. The company has recently applied for a liquor license at their main distribution, which if granted will allow companies to purchase their alcohol and have it delivered with stationery needs. It is estimated that the sales of liquor will make up less than 1% of total sales. I joined the company a few months ago and would like to know if it is prohibited for me to work for them if the license is granted and sales are so small in comparison to other products?

Bismillaah

A: It is permissible as long as you are not involved in the sales and purchases of the liquor in any anyway.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: Please make me maaf, I forgot to add some pertinent information. I am not involved in sales nor am I involved in the purchases of the alcohol, However I am the finance manager and will have to be involved in the payment. The company’s rules stipulate that 2 out of 3 people need to release a payment and of the 3 release’s 2 of us are Muslim. My department is also involved in ensuring that the invoicing is done correctly and that the invoice is matched to the stock delivered including price. This function is performed by a non-Muslim.

Bismillaah

A: This type of work is impermissible.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
