Using the name David instead of Dawood

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Where is the name David derived from. Would it be permissible to use it instead of Dawood?

A: When it is not an Islamic Arabic word then it is not at all right to use it. Like you cannot use the word Jesus for Isa and you cannot keep someone’s name as Jesus.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
