Marrying against one’s parents wishes

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I would like to know if your parents give their blessings to a marriage but say their answer is no can I still go ahead and get married and if none of my family members want to stand as witnesses can the guys witness be my witness as well ? I am hanafi

Bismillaah

A: Generally parents have more experience and understanding in the matters of nikaah compared to children and hence through them deciding there will be less chances of problems occurring later on. In the case of a girl, it is shameful and against the Sunnah for her to look for her own suitor and get married without the blessings of her parents. If your parents are not pleased with the Deen and akhlaaq of the boy you wish to get married to, then you should obey them and not marry him.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
