Question:

My friend is having a baby girl in a few weeks in-shā Allāh. They were thinking about different names. I was hoping you could clarify the names/meanings for the following:

  • The mother of Maryam (peace and blessings upon her). What is the Arabic spelling for the name, and the meaning?
  • Ḥafṣah, the meaning and Arabic spelling?

Answer:

In the Name of God, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate

Jazāk Allāh/ Thank you for contacting Mathabah for your question.

Mā-shā Allāh, congratulations on the anticipated arrival of the new born. May God bless the family with happiness and success.

  • The mother of Maryam was Ḥannah (See Ṣafwat Al Tafāsīr). The Arabic spelling for the name is حَنَّة and the meaning of Ḥannah is ‘gift or gentle’
  • The meaning of Ḥafṣah is ‘mercy or pleasant’ and is spelled حَفْصَة in Arabic. (See Lisān Al ʿArab)
