Question:

Assalamualaikum,

I know that a majority of the Hanafi Ulamaa has said that the beard must have a length of one fist.

Some brother said to me  that some Ulamaa said it is enough to keep it at a length at which it covers the skin. (at such a length that you can grab it with the top of your fingers) is this true and which Ulamaa has said this?

Also what is the status of wearing a moustache (without beard) as we seen many Muslims do?

Was salaam

Answer:

Nabi (S.A.W.) has ordered us to grow our beards.  The Ulamaa differ in the length as being one fist or left to grow.  Khattabi is of the opinion that it should be left to grow.  Ghazaali mentions in Ihyaa that the pious predecessors have different opinions regarding the length of the beard.  He mentions that it has been said that there is no harm in grabbing the beard in a fist and trimming whatever is below.  This is agreed upon by Ibni Sireen and Sha’bi.  Hasan … and Qatadah on the other hand disagree.  They are of the opinion that the beard should be left to grow to its fullest, because Nabi (S.A.W.) ordered us to grow our beards.  All the Ulamaa agree that to cut the beard to any length less than one fist won’t be permissible.  (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5)

It is also mentioned that to pluck the beard as it grows is amongst the ugliest and worst of actions.

The wearing of a moustache is fine as long as it doesn’t cover the upper lip.  However to wear a moustache and not a beard will be in direct contradiction to the command of Nabi (S.A.W.) which is:  “Grow/lengthen the beard and trim/cut the moustache.”  (Bukhari)
