Zakat on student loan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicPortal.co.uk

If a graduate has £10,000 and is also in a student loan debt of £27,000, is he required to pay Zakat on his assets?

Answer

A person with a student loan should only deduct the amount that is due or the amount he plans to repay within the next twelve months and give Zakat on the remainder of his assets. If he intends to repay the full loan, the whole amount will be deducted. When deducting, only the actual loaned amount will be deducted, not the interest.
