Minimum Length of Haydh (menstrual bleeding)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.ca

Question:

Would it be considered haydh if the bleeding starts at the regular time but stops almost right away.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, according to the Sharīʿah menstrual bleeding (ḥayḍ) is between three to ten days in length. Anything more or less is termed istiḥāḍah.[1]

If bleeding starts at the regular time but lasts less than three days and nights (72 hours), it is istiḥāḍah and not ḥayḍ.[2]
