Is a ring necessary for Nikaah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Comment: Assalam U Alaikum.

I am getting nikkah in July Insha Allah.  My question is, 1) do I have to present a ring for the nikah or the walimah? Looking forward to a reply as soon as possible. Thank you.

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

No it is not essential for you to present a ring for the nikah or the walimah. What is essential is that you give her a Mahr (dowry) which is something that is valuable. This can be cash money, jewellery or any other valuable property.

If you wish to give her a ring and consider this to be your dowry, then this is permissible. If you wish, you can give her a dowry as cash money or any other valuable, and then give her a ring as a gift.

And Allah Knows Best.
