Investing in Shares

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DaruliftaaZambia.com

Question

Can you hold shares in a company dealing in supply of electricity yet they utilise interest bearing loans for the capital expansion programmes? Can you also utilise dividends you get from such a company?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Buying, holding and investing in shares in a company is an academically contested issue amongst contemporary Ulama. Some Ulama conditionally allow the purchase of shares whilst others prohibit it entirely. In view of the differences of opinion, we advise that one adopts taqwa and avoid investing in shares.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
