Question Regarding Missing Rak’ats

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Daruliftaa.com

1) If a person misses one Rak’at behind the Imam, does he pray suratul fatiha only?

2) What is the ruling if he misses 3 Rak’ats in Zuhr?

3) Is one allowed to pray the same Surat that he prayed in the first Rak’at, in the second as well?

ANSWER

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

1) A Masbuq (late comer) will have to recite Surah al-Fatiha when completing his Salat. Surah al-Fatiha will be recited in all the Rak’ats that were missed.

2) If a late comer missed three Rak’ats of Zuhr Salat, he will recite Surah al-Fatiha with another Surah in each of the first two Rak’ats. In the last Rak’at, only Surah al-Fatiha will be recited.

3) To repeat a Surah in the next Rak’at is somewhat disliked (makruh Tanzihan) and one should avoid doing so. However, if one repeated a Surah due to forgetfulness, then he will be excused. The Salat in any case will be valid without performing Sajdah al-Sahw.
