Asking the Same Question to Many Muftis

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Question:

If I ask fatwa from a mufti, does it become obligatory for me to follow that fatwa and if I ask another mufti the same question after getting the first mufti’s answer, will I be sinning?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

No, it is not obligatory for you to follow a fatwa given by a mufti and likewise, you will not be sinful in asking a second mufti if you have doubt over the correctness of the fatwa issued by the first mufti.

The best practice however is to ask a mufti who you trust so there is no need to ask a second mufti. Asking the same question to multiple scholars can have its problems as you know.

Also to do fatwa shopping and ask around to seek the desired answer, or to seek a leeway is haram and prohibited.

Only Allah Knows best.
