Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

What is the ruling of the cross-contamination of food in a place where food is sold?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Yes, it would be permissible to use such a microwave/oven; however, you should thoroughly clean the insides of the microwave/oven (by wiping it using a cloth, towel, etc.) or cover your food with a lid, to avoid any chance of haram food contaminating your food, because there is a possibility of cross-contamination, hence, one should exercise precaution. Notwithstanding, if you choose to cover your food with a lid, at least clean the glass turntable so that your utensil does not become soiled. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم has stated, “Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubtful…” (Narrated by Tirmizi). By adopting the way of precaution, we will maintain our peace of mind, contrary to indulgence in doubtful matters.

In principle, if it has been confirmed that a certain product does not contain any haram ingredients, then one may consume it. Nevertheless, if there is fear of cross-contamination, then one should avoid such food items and search for a halal, pure, and doubt-free alternative.

Only Allah تعالى knows best.
