Is it permissible to name a daughter Laiba and what is its real meaning?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
A lot of people name their daughters “Laiba” .On the internet the meaning of Laiba is given as “leader of the Hoors in Jannah” I asked a local mufti but he said Laiba has no such meaning. Please clarify whether it is permissible to keep the name Laiba and its real meaning.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1586/1235/B=1431)

Laiba (لاعبہ) means a player while Layba (لائبہ) means thirsty, a woman who stays away from the water. Both these names are not good. We could not get the meaning of Laiba as “Leader of the Hoors in Jannah” in any dictionary, which you have quoted with the reference of internet.
