How can we best express our salams and salat to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Assalaamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu Respected Ulama of Deoband, I understand sending salam to our beloved nabi (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) but what does it mean to send salat as well? You said in a response to my question (Fatwa ID 619) that the word sallam in Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam have the words salah and salam. Please explain in detail.

(Fatwa: 768/768/J)

Salat means ?blessings? (durood) and sending salat means reciting words of blessings for the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallam). In Surah Al-ahzab, Allah has ordained Muslims to send salam and salat at the Prophet: إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا (Allah and His angels send blessings on the prophet: O ye that believe! send ye blessings on him, and salute Him with all respect. 33/56)

Now, one is allowed to send only salat as in the Durood Ibrahimi (اللھم صل علی محمد و علی آل محمد کما صلیت علی ابراھیم) or send only salam (as السلام علیک ایھا النبی ورحمۃ اللہ و برکاتہ), or one can combine both salam and salat as in صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم. All the three forms are allowed but it is better to combine both salam and salat.

Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) knows Best
