Is it permissible to work as an accountant of a beer distributor?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by AskOurImam.com

I received a job offer in a corporate office / accounting department for a large beer distributors located in Florida. This position will only process and pay invoices, reconcile vendor accounts and payments. Please advise if this Haram.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In response to your query to accept a job offer as an accountant in a beer firm, this could be addressed from two angles:

  1. Permissibility
  2. Suitability

As Muslims, we live by certain core values and do not compromise in that. All forms of intoxicants are prohibited[1] and we have a strong aversion to it. The Shariah clearly stipulates the evil of  intoxicant beverages and consequently Allah explicitly instructs us to distance ourselves from intoxicants[2]. The severity of the issue is illustrated by the words of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him):

Allah has cursed intoxicants, the one who drinks it, the one who pours it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who makes it, the one who it is made for, the one who carries it, the one who it is carried to and the one who consumes the money from its sale[3].

Whilst we understand that as an accountant, you will be only recording transactions and invoices and not directly involving yourself in any transaction, but our spirit of imaan will always prevail over us to question the suitability of accepting such a job offer[4].

It is thus the nature and nobility of a Muslim to be averse to all types of  intoxicants. Therefore, it is advised not to accept the job offer[5] but rather entertain hope in Allah, as Allah opens the doors of sustenance for those who entertain their hope in Him[6]. We make dua that Allah provides you with a Halaal job and enshrouds you with ultimate blessings thereof. Ameen.
