Compatibility and Marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I want to know is it permissible for my father to stipulate that my marriage can only take place to a Kholvad boy?

A. Islam allows parents to consider compatibility in culture and family status when marrying off their daughter, for this can contribute towards a better understanding between spouses. Although advisable, it is not compulsory. The decision should be based on character, piety and morals. If this is not found in the ‘Kholvad boy’ but found in a non-Kholvad, the Kholvad boy will be rejected and the non-Kholvad will be given preference.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
