Is crowdfunding permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Background:

I’m Anwaarullah and a Technologist based out of India. I’m employed as an IT Engineer. I’ve been working on a very cheap/affordable Azan/Jamath Prayer Clock for over two years now at my home over weekends and free time.

I’ve successfully made the first prototype and would like to manufacture it on a larger scale. Similar clocks in India are very costly and I’d like to build this affordable clock so that most of the Masjids in India can afford one.

I have a very small amount of savings and would need much more funds to make this project a reality.

My question:

Is crowdfunding (Indiegogo, Kickstarter etc) allowed in Islam? Can I used crowdfunding to ask for funds/donations online?

For some backers, I may give them an actual Clock, while for smaller amounts, there’s nothing except a big thanks.

What are your thoughts?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There are different types of crowdfunding.[1]

Please give full details of the crowdfunding scheme you plan on receiving donations from, including the agreements between yourself and the crowdfunding service (e.g. Kickstarter) and between yourself and the backers.
