Is salaah performed at home valid?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

If someone prays alone at home instead of going to the masjid and praying in congregation then is his prayer valid or not?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is compulsory upon every mature sane minded male to perform salaah in the musjid with congregation.[1]

Performing salaah with jamaat (congregation) has been greatly emphasized in Shariah.  Consider the following hadeeth:

عن أبى هريرة قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لقد هممت أن آمر فتيتى فيجمعوا حزما من حطب ثم آتى قوما يصلون فى بيوتهم ليست بهم علة فأحرقها عليهم

Translation: Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that the Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “I intend to instruct some youngsters to collect firewood then I go to those who perform prayer at their homes without a valid reason and set their houses on fire”[2]

Translation: Ibnu Abbas Radiyallahu Anhu reports “I heard Rasulullah  saying, ‘If a person in spite of hearing the Azan does not go to the Masjid (and prefers to perform his Salah at home) without a valid excuse, then his Salah is not accepted.” When the companions enquired as to what could be strong excuse, he  replied, “Illness or fear.”[3]

If one performs his saalah at home without a valid excuse, his salaah will be valid, albeit disliked. It is preferable to perform one’s salaah in the musjid as the place for fard salaah is the musjid.  In the time of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) and in the time Sahaba Radhiyallahu Anhum only a munaafiq (open hypocrite) would miss the congregational prayer without a valid excuse.
