Assalaam alaikum,
Is Female Circumcision Obligatory in Islam?
I have heard a lot on Female Circumcision and that it is practised in some countries. I have also heard that due to the procedure not carried out correctly in some cases, there are reports of girls suffering since it has an impact on their health and can even cause death. We have also seen cases of deaths reported in the media.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
There should be a distinction made between female circumcision and genital mutilation. According to Shari’ah, genital mutilation is impermissible.[1]
Female circumcision, on the other hand, is permissible.[2]

حدثنا سريج، حدثنا عباد يعني ابن العوام، عن الحجاج، عن أبي المليح بن أسامة، عن أبيه، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «الختان سنة للرجال، مكرمة للنساء» لكن إسناده ضعيف.
