Salat Intention, Raising Hands in Dua

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) I have two questions, can someone please guide me. First, is it necessary to say the wordings of niyat (intention) before Salat or just start with Allahu Akbar, when our intention is to perfom the Salat. Second, is it not advisable to raise your hands while saying dua? Please guide me as I am confused. [Zohra Ansari]

A.) Niyyat (intention) is the determination of the heart. That is sufficient. It is not necessary to make verbal intention. It is etiquette (Adab) to raise one’s hands during du’a. Raising the hands is a sign of humility and humbleness which is more conducive to the du’a being accepted. However, to raise the hands during du’a is not necessary. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
