How to Handle Gift of Questionable Food?

By Mufti Muhammad Kadwa

Q.) First off I would like to say JazakAllah khairan for providing us with a website where we can ask questions openly…. may Allah SWT give you the rewards. Ameen.

My question is with regards to food given to us by a Muslim family. They came to our house and brought a cake to give us. After they had left, we read the label to check the ingredients and found it to have mono and di-glycerides (possible pork fat abstract). No indications were found for it to be from a vegetable source. Should we throw the food away or give it to a non-muslim. However, I dont want to give it to a non-muslims because I will be then feeding them haram. what should I do? JazakAllah, [Anaf Durrani]

A.) If you are certain that the food product contains haram ingredients, you should dispose of it preferably by burying it if possible. It is not permissible to give to non-Muslims. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best

CHECKED AND APPROVED: Moulana Imraan Vawda

Albalagh Note: If the label does not specify the source of mono and diglycerides, the manufacturer can be contacted to get that information. It is possible that it is halal, after all. It will be prudent— and respectful of your guests — to investigate before disposing off the gift.
