Putting Collar with Bell on Animals

By Mufti Muhammad Kadwa

Q.) A friend of mine recently pointed out a hadith from Sahih Bukhari about the prohibition of bells and traveling with a dog, but in the explanation of the hadith it said that bells should not be hung around the animal’s neck. I have a cat and we have put a collar on him with a little sleigh bell that jingles when he moves so that we can tell where he is. Can you please tell us if this would be permissible or not. Whether we should leave it on or remove it. Jazaak Allah Khair. [Hashir Zuberi]

A.) The Fuqahaa have permitted bells around the necks of animals if there is a need for them. In your case, where there is a need for the collar with a bell, you are permitted to make use of such a bell. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
